There are two varieties of gems in corundum: ruby, if it is red and sapphire, for the other colors. Sapphire is one of the oldest gems. Known since antiquity, it takes its name from the Hebrew word Sappir, meaning “the most beautiful thing”. Sapphire is part of the corundum family. And yes, sapphire can be found in many wonderful colors! Blue, mauve, pink, yellow, orange, green, white/clear, black (one of my favourites!), brown, two-tone and star sapphire (in cabochon cut only ). In addition to offering a magnificent palette of varied colors, it has few inclusions and it has a high hardness of 9 out of 10 on the Mohs scale. The blue sapphire is the most popular of all. In its bluish form, it is a symbol of truth, purity, wisdom, fidelity and peace. It was for a long time worn as a talisman to protect against evil. The Persians believed that the blue of the sky was due to the reflections of sapphire.
